Make a Paper Flower Cake

Almost every occasion calls for a cake from anniversaries to weddings. Why not make a paper flower cake to complement the edible cake? It makes a great decoration and allows you to really use your creative energy.

A paper flower cake can be a replica of the main cake or it can be much smaller or larger and simply be a decoration for the occasion. If you are a beginner at making paper flowers you will need a book with flower patterns and instructions.

· Anniversary Paper Flower Cake - Each year of an anniversary represents something. For example the fifth anniversary flower is the daisy; the color(s) are pink and blue. The gemstone is sapphire. To create a cake using the 5th anniversary theme items is simple. You make your flower the daisy in pink and blue and use a sapphire blue flower as the cake topper or centerpiece. You can make a round cake of a square cake all you need is a piece of white Styrofoam to attach the flowers too.

· Birthday Paper Flower Cakes - Will require a few plastic craft store items depending on the person’s age and interests. You will just insert these items into the flower cake. You can purchase a small, medium and even large size wooden home at any craft store. I then paint it to match the color of the new home. I use the flowers to create a “front yard garden” theme. This flower cake is a lot of fun to create because you can add a little swing set picket fence and even a driveway with the same color and type of car the new homeowners own. Of course do not forget the mailbox! The new homeowners can use this as a decoration for several years to come.

· Wedding Paper Flower Cake - A wedding paper flower cake should be a mini replica of the real wedding cake. Use the same color and the flowers that the bride has chosen for the theme. This cake will look very nice on the gift table.

It is not only easy but it is fun to make paper flower cakes. The ideas above are just a few common everyday events that you can make a flower cake for. Don’t forget the holidays and other special occasions. If you make these cakes on a regular basis you should consider setting up a table at a local craft fair and selling them!

There are almost limitless theme possibilities when it comes to planning a baby shower, but there are three trends that stand out from the crowd in 2009.

The Retro Shower

This trendy baby shower has really taken off in 2009. It incorporates retro fashion colors into a fun and unique baby shower with a theme that everyone can enjoy. The Baby Blanket---A Necessity or a Nuisance

In this day and age of polar fleece and cute little baby caps and clothing, does the infant child really need a blanket? Some blankets are big and bulky and make it hard to wrap a baby in them without losing him in all the folds. Others are too small. They also slip and slide and hardly ever stay in place. Blankets have even been known to smother an infant. One time a friend had taken care of my baby son for the day. We made plans to meet along the road on my way home. There was a howling blizzard and he was all wrapped up and covered with a heavy blanket when she handed him to me. When I got back into my car and unwrapped him, I discovered that his head was on the wrong end of the bundle which we had been carrying so carefully. Now that couldn’t have been good! Is all this wrapping up really necessary?

Since the beginning of time, baby blankets have been made out of every material known to man–from mosses and leaves to buckskins and furs. It’s a natural instinct in all of us animals to want to protect our babies and keep them warm. Have you ever noticed how a dog or a cat will curl up around their young, lick them, and keep them cozy? Even a mother hen will take her chicks under her wings and bring them next to her. I grew up hearing the story of my aunt’s birth in 1908. She was born at home on the farm and weighed only 1 ½ pounds. They put her into a cotton lined cigar box which sat on the oven door of the old wood cookstove. Aunt Anne lived to be 93 years old!

There are many types of baby blankets in use today. These include receiving blankets, crib blankets, and security blankets. The receiving or “swaddling” blanket is the first covering a newborn baby will have. This blanket is usually made of soft, lightweight, cotton flannel which is easy to wrap tightly around the baby. Swaddling gives the newborn the snug, secure feeling of the womb. Evidence suggests that swaddling may help reduce the symptoms of colic. Researchers believe that swaddling may also lessen the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), because it prevents babies from rolling onto their stomachs. With what we now know of SIDS, it is safer for young babies to sleep on their backs rather than on their tummies. Years ago we were told that sleeping on the tummy would give the baby a sense of security and make it easier for him to get rid of gases which can cause colic or upset stomach. It is important for babies to feel just as snug and secure on their backs as they would on their tummies. We can do this by placing the baby’s hands in a natural position over the chest and securely wrapping him in a cloth wrap. Swaddling helps keep the baby from fidgeting and jerking as they settle and sleep. Once the infant is asleep his startle reflex is less likely to awaken him between sleep cycles. This makes a longer, more settled sleep for the baby and therefore helps mom and dad sleep better, too.

Baby security blankets come in many sizes, colors, weights, and textures. The term “security blanket” gained in popularity when Charles M. Schulz put the character “Linus” in his Peanuts cartoon strip. As you probably know, Linus drags his trusty blanket around with him wherever he goes. Linus isn’t a baby, but a little boy who feels comfortable with his blankee. A newborn usually can’t tell one blanket from another as long as it’s soft. By the time the baby gets 6-12 months old, he has his routine and certain items he likes and others he dislikes. Parents are the ones who have given him this routine and the items to have and hold. The baby by this time is familiar with certain objects—many times a soft toy or a blanket (sometimes both). These items provide comfort at nap time or bedtime and make it much easier for the child to sleep contentedly. 8 Scrapbooking Materials - Tips To Choose Them Wisely

Years ago, it was hard to find stores that sold scrapbooking materials. But avid scrapbookers created a demand, and today you can find local stores devoted to scrapbooking and other retailers like craft stores that sell a huge variety of books, papers, and decorations. In fact, the hard part today is choosing what to use in your scrapbook. This article covers some basis that will help you make wise purchases and create a beautiful scrapbook.

Beginners are overwhelmed by their choices when they get into the store. There is so much variety that it's hard to pick out items from over-stocked shelves. And if you're making your first scrapbook, the excitement of discovering so much variety of color, design, layout, and concept available to you is overwhelming.

The trick for beginners is realizing that there are a few basic things to buy in the beginning. It's best not to get everything at once. The best start is selecting a few key pieces and building some test pages first to be sure you enjoy the hobby and to see if those materials are what you really want to support your theme.

Planning your project is a great way to limit initial purchases and focus on a few items. That way, you're not overwhelmed by the range of options, and you don't get home with many items you'll never use. Making that first trip for scrapbooking materials can be an expensive lesson in planning!

Even seasoned scrapbookers fall into this trap. Stumbling upon a great sale is a sure way to overstock your own scrapbooking supplies. We see things that look great on the shelf and, even though we don't have a use for it now, we just have to have it for later on. Planning your shopping trip by focusing on a few pieces will help you practice some self-restraint and save your hard-earned pennies.

Your first step for creating a wonderful scrapbook without going broke is planning. Sit down and think about what you want the final product to look like. Your vision doesn't have to be detailed, but you should have a good feeling for your subject, colors, and how much material your scrapbook will contain.

1. Finding the Right Album
The most important material for your scrapbook is the book itself. You'll find hundreds of sizes, designs, and presentation formats at the store. These are a few basic choices that make sense.

Traditional albums are the size of typing or copy paper (8-1/2x11") or one-foot squares (12x12"). Smaller albums are growing in popularity as new scrapbooking approaches increase. You'll find smaller squares that are easy to pack, carry, and decorate (for example, 6x6" to 8x8").

2. Page Protectors that Don't Also Detract
You'll need page protectors to preserve your pages and the photos, memorabilia, and decorations they contain. Scrapbook pages can be vulnerable to tearing and other damages. Page protectors also help keep stock-on items from falling out of the book as it ages.

There are two basic choices for page protectors: clear transparent protectors and non-glare protectors.

3. Using the Right Papers
Papers are basic to your color theme and overall design. The paper you choose for your background is an important part of the overall appeal of your scrapbook. Patterned papers are the most popular today. But it's important to remember that your backgrounds should frame your pages, not overwhelm them. They should be in subtle colors to help focus the eye on the photos and central items rather than the background paper.

4. Selecting Cardstock
Cardstock is a staple in the world of scrapbooking. Cardstock is heavier than normal paper, though not as heavy as cardboard. Many office supply stores sell cardstock for report covers and mailers. It's heavy enough not to crease or fold easily but light enough to bend. Used in a scrapbook, cardstock is an effective foundation for embellishments, memorabilia, and photographs.

5. Picking an Adhesive
Adhesive holds everything together - literally. There are many types of adhesive available, but experienced scrapbookers know how important it is to use the appropriate type. You should always look for acid-free adhesives that are safe for photos. Adhesives with acids can cause the pictures to oxidize, paper colors to bleed or fade, and cause spots in embellishments like fabric, ribbons, or lace.

6. Take Care with the Paper Cutter
Sizing your inserts is a very important part of scrapbooking. Paper cutters are good for cropping photos, creating interesting shapes, and customizing standard decorations. But be careful! Paper cutters can also make you a bit over-enthusiastic, and you may destroy your item before it gets to the pages of your scrapbook. Avoid using the paper cutter with anything other than paper. While they keep the edges of photos and other paper items straight and clean, you should not try to use them with heavier decorations or fabric.

7. Scissors - a Necessity
The number one tool for scrapbooking is a pair of good scissors. They help you make custom shapes and make clean cuts in fabrics, ribbons, and other decorations. They'll help you make interesting pieces to fit your pages. By using similar shapes, your scissor-cut inserts can even make their own design theme.

8. Rulers
A beautiful scrapbook is precise and clean. Each item on the page must be neatly cut, balanced, and straight. Your ruler will save much time in marking guidelines and making sure the pieces fit properly.

There are hundreds of materials and tools available for scrapbookers today. Among those we haven't discussed are vellum, white plastic erasers, self-healing cutting mats, glue erasers, pens and pencils, photo corners, lettering stencils and fonts, and the trusty X-acto knife. You'll probably want to organize your scrapbooking materials in a toolkit of some kind. That way, you can keep everything together and avoid buying duplicates.

Holiday Scrapbooking Ideas â Making Memories for Years to Come

There are many important characteristics of a good holiday scrapbook, and it is all a matter of personal preference. Since the idea is to compile your own memories into your own personal album, it is important that you choose them carefully.

Photos

One of the key ingredients of a holiday scrapbook is your photos. The images you portray are much of what actually make up a good part of your holiday memories, and often depict a true representation of your family and friendships. Since there are probably several from which to choose, you might consider coming up with a central theme for your holiday scrapbook and base everything you decide to include on that idea. For example, if your scrapbook is a Christmas album, you would want to use pictures that are representative of that holiday.

Use a wide variety of photos within your central theme. If you have children, include pictures of them taking part in various holiday activities. Also include photos of other friends and family members, and then tie it all together by using group photos that show the involvement of your entire clan. You can use pictures of your child sitting on Santaâ€™s lap, photos of people opening presents, and images of everyone around the Christmas tree.

Use images that are unique and will easily show others your dynamic personality. Decide on striking images in attractive settings that will make the viewer stop to look at and admire them. Choose carefully, and have fun creating your holiday scrapbook.

Journaling

Journaling is another important part of your holiday scrapbook. While not everyone chooses to do this, it is a good way to keep track of the memories that go along with the photos. By writing down the date and time the photo was taken, the names of everyone in it, and other information such as the location, event, and various activities that took place at that particular time, you will be able to easily recall the day as if it had just occurred. This is especially important if the holiday scrapbook is passed down from one generation to another, because often times later generations either werenâ€™t old enough to remember the actual event as it took place, or werenâ€™t even present at that time. Journaling is also a good way to add character and personality to the images, and helps them tell a story.

Urge others whose images are included in the holiday scrapbook to write down their memories and ideas.
