Crochet Dude New Patterns

The Crochet Dude, otherwise known as Drew Emborsky, learned to crochet at age five. After studying fine art in college and doing the "starving artist" thing for years, he began crocheting for charity. During this time with the charity group, he became known as "The Crochet Dude", which then led to the launch of his wildly popular blog, www.thecrochetdude.com. Since then, Drew has published numerous patterns in magazines and compilation books, and his own full-length books, has appeared as a guest on various TV programs, and is currently the crochet expert on the hit PBS show "Knit and Crochet Today." Drew lives in Houston, Texas, with his cats Chandler and Cleocatra.

It's been a while since I made a greeting card with my craft stamps. I have been using my Cricut Expression machine to make my greeting cards lately and I wanted to go back and use some of my craft rubber stamps that I have, and boy do I have craft stamps. One day I will post some pictures of all the craft stamps that I have.

Anyway, for this birthday card I wanted to share with you first of all a really cute craft stamps, some cool rubber stamping techniques and all this while I am making a birthday card for my father-in-law. When he was at my home in March, I took him to his first ever craft rubber stamps convention. He couldn't believe how many different craft stamps they had as well as how many ladies were all in one convention center. It was great and where we found some special craft rubber stamps, so I thought I would show him what I can create using some rubber stamping techniques that I have learned over the years.

I just love craft stamps that pertain to cats, and this particular craft stamp reminds me of my cat Tapioca. He is so cute.

What you will need:

Cat craft stamps (Stamps by Judith)
Sentiment - Happy Birthday ~ Perfectly Clear craft stamps (Stampendous)
StazOn Black Solvent Ink Pad
Watercolor pencils (Loew-Cornell)
Water Brush
Flower Pot paper punch (Emaginations)
Paper from Stampin' Up: Really Rust, Sage Shadow, Barely Banana, and Basic Black. I have no clue where I got the white card stock from.
Adhesive pop dots and tape runner

How to make it:

First I cut all the card stock listed above to get the layered look that I wanted for this card.
Then I stamped the cat craft stamps image with my Black StazOn ink pad. I then put embossing powder on the wet ink and heat set.

The reason why I used the solvent ink and embossed is that I am now going to use my watercolor pencils to color in the image and I did not want the black ink to run into the colors.

I used watercolor pencils along with my water brush, to color the cat and the stem and leaf. I then used another of my great rubber stamping techniques and that was to color the flower with an embossing marker and then put on the embossing powder. Using my heat gun I then made the flower have a shiny finish.

I punched out of brown paper the flower pot. I put the pop dots only at the rim of the flower pot, and then used my tape runner for the bottom of the flower pot. I wanted to give a three dimensional look like the cat was really sitting in the flower pot.

I then used Tulip Color Point Stitch paint to make the dirt. I really got inside the rim to get the effect that the cat was in the pot. I again used my heat gun to set the paint and give it the uneven puffy look. (When I was cleaning my craft closet a few months back I came across all of these Tulip paints and all of my craft stamps and I wanted to start using them for fun projects like this one).

For the inside I used one of my Perfectly Clear craft stamps and stamped Happy Birthday. Nice and simple.

I almost forgot, I finished him off with a little black and white ribbon that I tied around his neck, for a fun look for my cat.

I hope he like the card, since I used the craft stamps that we bought together. I sure had a lot of fun making it. I think now that I had so much fun with this card that I will start using more from the collection of my craft stamps for upcoming birthdays and holidays.

So you just got yourself a flat. The usual scenario: wake up at 6, leave by 7, home by 11 just to sleep. Most of the time, you don't even have breakfast, lunch or dinner at home. You just simply go home to sleep. And the cycle continues. It's like living in a hotel. No wonder your friends still see huge, un-opened boxes of your clothes. It's obvious that you don't even have time to really make your house, a home.

A house is a home when you not just own it, but when you also actually live in it. You don't have to spend every waking second at your house. Do yourself a favor and decorate it. The point is to make it look lived-in, not to make a jungle out of your house. It's one of the few ways to make yourself, not to mention your guests, feel cozy and snug at some place you can call your home.

There are many ways to beautify your home. But for a more organized and coordinated setting, opting for theme-based decorations are the way to go. Here is a list of themes. Take your pick.

Futuristic

This look ranges from today's look to space age. Walls are painted with dark colors like blue or black. On the other hand, neons are very much accepted. Little traces of neon colors like green and pink are still visible. They are adorned with hanging chandeliers that looks like it was made of scraps of stainless steel. There is nothing that could remind anyone of grasslands and the country. If there is, it would come from a single rose living inside a transparent glass. Carpets in rich red or vibrant colors are not allowed. However, you can still have warm light bulbs. Mirrors from ceiling to floor are good. Now your room looks like a place in a sci-fi movie.

Mediterranean

Go for pastel colors. Light aquas, greens, yellows and pinks work well on your wall. You can choose one or have them in stripes. Having a hammock works well with the theme, too. Pictures of the seaside, sand on the floor and wooden decorations are good additions. You may also have candles in your room at night instead of the regular fluorescent light. You can have a net with shells glued on it attached on the ceiling. Just be careful in case the shell falls off. Instead of doors, you may use a curtain of seashells that can double as wind chimes. The only con here is that the shells might have sharp edges.

Country

You can go for very warm colors of red, brown and orange to paint on walls or if your wall is made of rich brown wood, stone or brick, then you don't need to paint it. Rugs and carpets should have a touch of rich red that can be an accent with the warmness of the room. Light bulbs go better than fluorescent ones. You may also put artificial heads of different animals that are usually hunted on your walls or by the fireplace. A grandfather's clock or the old cuckoo clock is a nice decoration. The older the pieces, the better. The idea is to make look it as cozy as possible.

Oriental

Asian adornments vary greatly. In northern parts of Asia, rich colors like red and gold are the signs of good luck. Wood is also a very important material, as well as silk. You can have throw pillows wrapped in red silk covers and tie a gold ribbon around it. You may also do origami and fold paper. You can make lots of those and put them in a basket or make a few and frame them. Instead of the usual doors, you use a very thin translucent paper, cover an entire frame and use it as a sliding door. Or, this is not exactly safe, but you can also do this to your window.

Victorian

If your house is made of stone or brick, then this is for you. You can use torches instead of the usual fluorescent. The idea is to make the house look haunted but only without the webs and creepy crawlies. You may put freshly-picked rich red roses in a vase. You can also use old chandeliers. If you have antique furniture then it would be great to use it. A grandfather's clock is also good. If you have a suit of armor, then you can use it as a decoration. An old grand piano is a nice accent too. No happy colors, please. Hang antique pictures that seem to be decaying with age. Make sure they are placed in picture frames worthy to be in the museum.

You are not restricted to one theme only. You can stick to one single theme and apply it to your entire house or you can use different themes to each room. You may also combine different themes or with whatever works for you.

Bath toys such as Animal Sponge Capsules and Gelli Baff will keep them entertained in the bath.

9) Colorful pencils, erasers, glue sticks, chalk, rulers and stickers. These school supplies are likely in need of replenishment at the start of the new calendar year.

10) And of course don’t forget candies and chocolates.

Stocking Stuffers for Girls

Girls, like boys also like most toys and games but they tend to be a little more practical and like their mother would probably love to dress up and look pretty. Here are my Top 10 stocking stuffers for Girls:

1) Jewelry. Items such as, hair clips, energy bead bracelet and other hair decorations will go down well.

2) Girls tend to be more patient and creative and many love to paint, draw or make things. Hence, items like make your own jewelry, arts and crafts, putty are very well received.

The unique qualities of clear acrylic stamps make them a perfect choice for scrapbooking. Stamping on scrapbook pages has always been a challenge. Placing the stamp and avoiding excess ink are a few of the concerns that keep most scrapbookers from trying stamping techniques on their page layouts, but now with the availability of clear acrylic stamps, anyone can get fantastic results from stamps on their scrapbooking pages.

Clear acrylic stamps, also called polymer stamps, are different from traditional wood block or foam-backed rubber stamps. They are more economical because they are not pre-mounted. Clear stamps are naturally tacky and stick to an acrylic block. They are easily removed allowing you to reuse the block again and again. You simply purchase unmounted clear stamps from any manufacturer, and these work with any clear acrylic mount. Buy a larger mount first that can be used with both small and large stamps. These stamps are also much easier to store, and because they are acrylic, they are lightweight and easy to transport to scrapbooking crops or classes.

Using clear stamps with scrapbooking couldn't be easier. Choose from words, designs and image clear stamps, and peel and stick them to an acrylic block. Now you're ready to start stamping. Because the block and stamp are transparent, you can see exactly where you want to place the imprint. No more misaligned prints! You will have precise placement every time and no more guesswork or stamping mistakes.

Another unique feature of clear acrylic stamps is the ability to mix and match them. With wood and rubber stamps you have to realign your stamps to use more than one stamp together. It takes at least 2 stamping imprints to achieve the same results with one acrylic block. While you can use your clear art stamps individually, the ability to peel and stick to a large acrylic block makes it easy to stamp entire phrases or scenes with one stamp. Just choose your stamps and arrange them all on one clear mount. They can even be from different stamp manufacturers. It's even possible to cut portions of one stamp apart and arrange them in a different pattern for stamping or use only a part of the stamp. Clear art stamps offer much more versatility and functionality than rubber stamps.

Because new stamps tend to resist ink, many scrapbookers recommend conditioning your clear stamps before you use them the first time. Some use a fine grit sandpaper and others prefer a pink eraser. Simply, scuff
the surface of a brand new stamp. This will help it to hold ink more effectively. After stamping with ink, clean it with mild soap and water or rubbing alcohol. Avoid oil-based cleaners, acetone and bleach because these can damage and break down your stamp. Some scrapbookers have difficulty getting a crisp image from clear polymer stamps. To improve the quality of the ink impression, try using a cushioned-surface under your scrapbooking paper. A soft mouse pad works well for this purpose. Using this cushioning effect may take a bit of practice, but the results will be worth it.

Be sure to store your clear stamps in a dark place away from sunlight or indoor lighting. Light can discolor and harden them prematurely. Some inks can stain them, but this won't affect their use. Because they are polymer based, one downside is that they do not last as long as rubber stamps will, but with proper care and storage, you will get years of scrapbooking with quality images from your clear stamps.

Have you joined the ranks of aspiring authors ready to take the next step to self publishing in the digital age of publishing? If so, congratulations! But wait, before you rush off to press, there are some things you should do to prepare your book for successful self-publishing. The preparation step of the self-publishing process includes everything you need to do to your book manuscript before you deliver it to the book printer. This includes deciding your publishing goals.

For example, is your book a personal family history book that you plan to sell to a few friends and family? Or do you plan to mass-market your book to the world? After deciding your market then you should avoid the following common mistakes:

1. Failure to write a Business Plan
This is where your book publishing journey should begin. You don't have to start with a 15-page document. But do create an outline of all the costs that you will encounter in the self-publishing process.

Outline your costs before publication, after publication and everything from the beginning costs to the shipping price of mailing a book. This is the time you decide whether you should print a small amount of books for family or set up a small publishing company by buying a block of ISBNs.

2. Failure to get ISBN Numbers.
An ISBN number is what identifies you as a book publisher. Currently, it is the only way you can be considered a self-publisher in the publishing industry. At the time of this writing, no one can give, assign or sell you ISBNs except RR Bowker, the U.S. ISBN agency.

3. Failure to invest in Book Editing.
Don't cut corners here. Invest in your book; get it professionally edited. Copy or line editing will bring your manuscript up to professional standard. Don't settle for just having your family member take a look at your manuscript.

4. Failure to hire a book designer for book layout.
The book layout is what structures the content of your book and makes it look like a book. Again invest in your book project; this is not the time to settle for anything less than a professional look. If your book looks sloppy, it will limit its success in the market.

5. Failure to create bound galleys for reviews.
Bound galleys, limited run book proofs, are often unedited and used to get book reviews before the publication date of your book. Also, bound galleys do not have a laminated full color cover.

6. Failure to get your book proofread.
Beginner publishers skip this step in preparing their book for publication. Professional publishers know not to skip this step. A book full of errors can cost you in sales later on--including loss of respect for your important message.

Proofreading is not the same as editing; only done after the book designer formats or lays out your book into pages. The proofreader looks at word breaks and sentence layout. Some minor corrections missed in the first line edit may also be made.

7. Failure to invest in cover design.
75% of 300 booksellers reviewed (half from independent bookstores and half from chains) recognized the look and design of the book cover as the most important part. They agreed the jacket is prime real estate for promoting a book. On that note, your book cover design has great importance. It can cause your book marketing campaign to fail or succeed. So, I encourage you to get your book cover professionally designed.
