Rubber Stamps for Office Use

Stamps are “bear necessity” in the office and very useful for personal usage.

The key word to describe the product and its necessity is “Saving”.

Sometime I wonder when I hear people say that they avoided ordering stamps because of its price.

I know that it's not right to judge people for the way they spend their money. What's “expensive” to one can be “cheap” to another, and the other way round. So the question might not be whether rubber stamps are expensive or not but are they worthy? Do they justify spending money purchasing them?

I believe they do! I ordered a rubber stamp 20 years ago, when I was a school teacher, and it's still with me, still functioning, still working, and still usable. 20 years of serving my needs means only one thing: my rubber stamp proved itself worthy and the 16$ it cost me worked fine for 80 cents a year.

A stamp is a device which is made for minting a short massage on a written able surface, mostly on paper, but not only. The common use is to mint repeating constant information on predictable, and mostly unpredictable occasions. We wouldn't need a stamp when it comes to everyday routine prepared in advance purposes. In such cases we can order printed materials: envelopes, forms, letterheads and other stationeries.

The unpredictable improvised cases, when stamps are the right solution, can be such as:

1. You have to send a letter and you are not in your office, you don't have a printed envelope within reach. You pull your rubber stamp out of your pocket and mark the naked envelope with your details and “Logo” clean and fast.
2. You came to visit your employees on their outdoors working site. Instantly they need some kind of a formal authorization for something. They improvise paper sheets and write down what ever they have to. You make these improvised notes formal by using your rubber stamp, which is always handy.
3. You are an exhibition curator and one of your responsibilities is to mark masterpieces which were sold. Coming visitors will know that this or that piece of art is already sold.

There are stamps with changeable data, especially sequential data like dates or serial numbers. Such stamps increase the reliability of the information which us minted by it.

There were times when stamps were made of two devices: the stamp itself and the ink pad. It was really inconvenient to carry them both around; the ink was drying out fast and using the whole combination seldom left ink stains on your hands and all around you. Today rubber stamps are packed in a sealed small plastic device and can be used again and again without ink refilling for years and no stains at all. Such stamps can be carried around even in your shirt pocket, clean and neat, ready to be used.

People ask me whether stamps can replace business cards. Technically speaking the answer is yes. One can order a stamp with the exact same information he has on his business card. If you want to save money it is possible. But the business cards of today are colorful and graphically designed so beautifully that you can't compare them with single colored poorly designed stamps.

What will you do for National Scrapbooking Day? Here are some ideas:

1. Have a scrapbooking party with your friends! No scrapbooking friends to invite? Teach a friend your love! Tell them to bring some pictures and you'll share your supplies! What more could you ask for than companionship and scrapbooking!?

2. Or, scrap alone! The point of National Scrapbooking Day is to celebrate our hobby!

3. Spend some time rearranging your scrapbook area to optimize your space. We all know that organization is the key to efficiency and storage of supplies tends to be overwhelming to every scrapbooker. So, taking time to organize your storage will reap huge returns when it comes time to make a layout or card. Plus, you'll probably get inspired by unearthing forgotten scrapbooking embellishments!

4. Get inspired to learn a technique. Look through some magazines to find something you've always wanted to try and apply it to a scrapbooking layout.

To get you started, here are some ideas of scrapbooking embellishments you could incorporate into your scrapbooking layout:

* Buttons - line clear buttons with coordinating paper

* Ribbon - thread ribbon around chipboard, add it to journaling spots, or use it to frame a picture

* Brads - use brads to make an initial or monogram, as the center of flowers, or to anchor mini-albums, accordion albums, or fold-out albums

* Embossing - make it the focus embellishment by layering embossing powder into a mound (heating between layers) and pushing a rubber stamp into the still-hot embossing powder

* Stamping - make a new background paper using 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation stamping (first impression is stamping with a freshly inked stamped, second impression is stamping immediately after the first stamping without re-inking, and third impression is stamping a third time without re-inking)

* Distressing - using white core Close To My Heart cardstock, score your paper with your scoring tool on your paper cutter and then sand the top layer off to reveal unique patterns

* Chipboard - use chipboard as a scrapbooking embellishment in titles, as photo corners, to spruce up tags, and cover mini-albums

* Liquid Glass - add Liquid Glass to the top of stamped image for a polished scrapbooking embellishment

* Stitching/sewing - either free hand or with a sewing machine, stitching gives projects a handmade touch

* Doodling - add a little of yourself to your work by doodling along to accent your page or cut out the doodles to use as scrapbooking embellishments

* Jewels, glitter, sequins, and rhinestones - add some sparkley bling to your layout and turn up the intensity of your design!

* Hidden journaling - if you don't like your handwriting or you'd rather not highlight it on a layout, hide it behind a paper flap or photograph

* Painting - use paint to create a multi-dimensional effect on otherwise plan cardstock or use texture cardstock to add further dimension!

5. Or, if you simply can't get motivated to create a scrapbook layout anew: scraplift! Find inspiration in the Close To My Heart (CTMH) Summer 2009 Idea Book or browse a gallery of scrapbooking pages and put your layout together!

6. If all else fails, there is nothing like SHOPPING for new products to motivate you to create!

History of ‘Stamping’

The stamp (and its usage) has a history that can be traced as far back as 3000BC. This was the time when stamps and seals came into use. During those days, verbal or written communication was not easy. This gave rise to the extensive use of stamps, and more common in those days, seals. These seals would usually come from a hand stamp or a ring to mark vital documents.

Some ancient civilizations, and later, some of the aboriginal cultures from the recent past, practiced a primitive form of rubber stamping to “mark and tattoo” images on their bodies.

The first modern usage of rubber stamps was seen as early as 1866, used to stamp information on bath tubs.

Types of Stamps

The ancient civilizations had stamps and seals made from an array of materials - stone, wood, bone and metals. Today such stamps and seals are most often made from rubber.

• Rubber Stamp - Here, information (seal of approval, receipt, address, art, logo, etc.) is carved onto a flat piece of rubber, and that is mounted onto a stable object like wood, acrylic, or metal make for efficient and easier usage. They need a separate ink pad.

• Self inking Stamps – Self inking stamps are an ‘evolved’ version of the original rubber stamp. These stamps don’t need a separate ink pad, and can be used, and re-used, giving you the same consistency every time.

While choosing a stamp, one must keep in mind the use of the stamp. For example, if you are looking for a stamp which would have to remain the same – a company seal, or a “NO EXCHANGE, NO REFUND” stamp, then you can prefer a relatively cheaper static rubber stamp.

When you put time and effort into picking out the perfect gifts for your loved ones, why rush the wrapping? You choose a roll of paper at random and slap on a bow that (kind of) matches. If you put thought into it, wrapping your gifts can be the most fun aspect of gift giving. It allows you to set your creativity free and think outside the box. Here are some ideas that can turn your gifts into stylish, presentation-worthy pieces of art.

Go green

Going green is big these days, and gift-wrap should not be excluded from the trend. You can repurpose items in your home to make unique wrapping paper. Any paper-like material can easily be converted to wrapping paper:

• Sheet music

Newspaper and flour sacks are unexpected and funky ways to dress your gifts. Grocery sacks can be decorated with rubber stamps or markers, making a great craft project for children. Old sheet music can be used as is, or antiqued with a tea stain for an Old World feel.

Going green with your gift-wrap is good for the environment and your pocketbook. Plus, when you repurpose paper items to use for wrapping, your trendy gifts are sure to make an impression.

Creative containers

There are always some gifts that seem impossible to package. Oddly shaped or awkwardly sized items usually get stuffed into some kind of gift bag as a last resort. There’s nothing wrong with gift bags, but they don’t show the recipient of your gift that you made much effort in the presentation. If you think beyond the bounds of pre-fab gift boxes and gift bags, you might just find the perfect container to house your gift.

If you have a fussy gift to wrap, keep your eye peeled for a box or item that it would fit in. For example, you can make your own traditional Christmas crackers out of toilet paper and paper towel rolls. Simply slide your gift in the roll, wrap decorative paper around the base and then tie off the ends with ribbon. Wah-lah! Who would have thought toilet paper could be so beautiful?

CD cases are also great for small, hard-to-wrap gifts. You can slide gift cards, money or even jewelry in the case. Then, add a custom touch by decorating the cover of the CD case with photos, the recipient’s name or any fun design you choose. Your clever gift-wrapping will have your gift recipient singing along to a gracious tune.

Tag it

Gift tags are essential to remember which gift goes to whom. The stick-on labels you can buy at the store are OK, but can make your gift look more like a delivery from the mailman than Santa’s sleigh. If you make your own gift tag, you can create something special that does more than merely designate whom the recipient is.

Making gift tags doesn’t have to be an elaborate process. Glue a picture of the receiver on cardstock for a fun tag that doesn’t require a label. Or, place a poem or quote on one side of the tag. It’s the extra touches that make people take notice of the effort you put toward the gift.

Finishing touches

One of the easiest ways to customize your gift-wrap is with little add-ons that complete the package. You can tuck in just about any small object you want to turn your generic gift into something special. Here are some items that make great gift toppers:

• Sprigs of greenery
• Bells
• Packages of candy

Years ago there was only one option for rubber stamps and the crafter. The typical wood mounted rubber stamp. Many of the old rubber stamps also came with handles like business stamps today, while others had simple pegs. Thanks to the growth of this hobby, you can now buy many different types of stamps ranging from mounted, unmounted, clear acrylic, foam, individually, or by the sheet. Just a quick check online will show many companies who sell stamps in all of the above types. You might wonder what the best type of stamp to buy is. While it would be wonderful to be able to give a black and white answer, each type has applications that they perform better than the others. We'd like to take the mystery out of what type of stamp to use, when, and how to use it.

Not that long ago, foam stamps were intended to be used by children. While that may have been true many years ago, high quality foam stamps can be purchased these days. Foam stamps are a fantastic choice when you're going to be stamping on fabric or walls. Beyond being inexpensive, they have a very deep image that is perfect for stamping on rough surfaces. Will you be stamping fabric, denim, walls, plaster, or tin? Foam stamps are probably your best option.

Twenty years ago, if you told someone that you had an entire closet filled with rubber stamps, they would've thought you were a crazy fanatic. These days, it is not uncommon at all to have stamps filling up cabinets and closets, a fact that has created a huge demand for stamp storage units. Because mounted rubber stamps, with a wood mount, are bulky and take up a lot of space, some crafters like the idea of buying unmounted rubber stamps. Most of the time, you can buy them in a full sheet at a time and save a bundle, or you may want to buy them individually. Unmounted stamps can be backed with anything from magnets to static cling foam, and can be mounted on the medium of choice. Some prefer using traditional rubber stamps that have been trimmed close to the design and then placed on a static cling foam that can be mounted easily on acrylic blocks. While cost per stamp is usually the biggest concern, another immediate advantage of unmounted stamps is the inexpensive shipping, because you're not paying to ship the wood mount. Beware of buying bargain bags since these are usually of very low quality and the designs are very poor.

Acrylic rubber stamps are the newest stamps on the block. Either someone loves them or they hate them. Clear stamps have a fanatical following one day and every one dislikes them the next day. When you've spent a long amount of time on a scrapbook page and you want to make some final touches with a stamp, the last thing you want to do is ruin all the work you've done by having a smudge or putting something in the wrong place. Because clear stamps are placed on a clear acrylic block, you can see that you get good ink coverage of your stamp and precise placement. You can even double stamp by placing stamped images on top of each other. Keep in mind when looking for clear acrylic stamps that not all are created equal. If you've ever bought cheap clear stamps, you were probably extremely disappointed. Inexpensive, cheap acrylic stamps usually show themselves by attracting lots of dirt, and they usually tear easily. The best clear acrylic stamps made in the U.S.A. are manufactured by Stewart Superior. The proprietary photopolymer this company uses has the perfect amount of stickiness and is very durable. Sometimes when clear acrylic stamps are placed in the sun, they do discolor, but it does not affect in any way the stamped image.

The classic wooded mounted rubber stamp doesn't need any introduction. While the selection available used to be limited to your local craft and hobby store, hundreds stores now sell unique mounted rubber stamps online. Natural rubber creates the clearest, most detailed image of all the stamp types. You should not get a smudged image (common with clear acrylic stamps) with a natural rubber stamp because the rubber pores soak up ink better than the clear polymer.

So which is best? Foam, unmounted, clear, or mounted, we will have to leave the choice up to you. The truth is, they all have their place for certain projects. If your next project is going to be on fabric, or you want to stamp baby room walls, we'd recommend you find some high-quality, foam stamps. Buy a few of each design and if one gets damaged, you can just quickly go to another one. Are you working on a long scrapbook album that's taken hours of work? Want to put some final touches with stamps? I strongly encourage you to buy some clear acrylic stamps. There are some fantastic designs out there that you can use. By using clear acrylic stamps, you can be assured that you won't mess up the hours and hours of work you already put into the project. Are you making cards, scrapbook pages, gift boxes, or patterned paper? Wood mounted rubber stamps or unmounted stamps, mounted your preference, are still your best bet in the end. It's not so much what kind of stamp you have, but what kind of application you're going to be using it with.
